Learning from the Patchwork Text process – A retrospective discussion

After about two years of work with the Patchwork Text process in our different contexts, and after writing our individual case studies, we decided we would like to put together a 'joint statement' about what we had learned. Given the quite different directions in which each of us had taken the original general idea, this was itself necessarily conceived as a sort of Patchwork. We decided we would individually prepare a statement of specific ideas that had emerged from our own work, but present them in a spoken forum, so that discussion of points of difference and overlap could take place.

Applied epistemology for community nurses:evaluating the impact of the Patchwork Texts

In this article we describe how and why a version of the Patchwork Text assessment format was developed for a module called ‘Perspectives on Research in Professional Practice’. This was a module where the teaching and assessment processes were working well but, it was, felt, a more reflective, synthetic, cumulative and open-ended assessment would lead to better learning. We then present comparative material to show how the new format was evaluated by students and how the new format affected the intellectual performance of students.

Contextualizing the Patchwork Text: Addressing problems of coursework assessment in higher education

The procedures of the Patchwork Text coursework assignment format are outlined, and a general justification of their current educational importance is presented. The argument begins with a review of current literature on assessment processes in higher education, followed by a discussion of work on the nature of 'academic literacies'. The Patchwork Text is compared with other assignment formats, including the portfolio and, especially, the essay. The advantages of the Patchwork text over the essay are argued in the light of general theories of the nature of learning.
